Renault Kwid EV: With India’s automotive environment changing geared towards electric mobility, makers are also not concering behind in launching budget-friendly EVs built for the city traffic and its needs.
Renault is also developing the Kwid EV, which will be based on the global K-ZE platform.
Billed as one of the cheapest electric hatchbacks for sale in the country, the Renault Kwid EV promises to combine everyday usability with eco-friendly power, all wrapped up in a cute, city-friendly package.
While Electric Kwid takes the original’s compact dimensions, SUV like stance and affordable ownership proposition forward from petrol to electric, it drags the car kicking (well, spinning on its hub motors) and screaming (over the whir of its electric drivetrain) into a greener future.
Design and Styling
The Kwid EV appears to be identical to the Kwid petrol at first glance, but with a few, discreet EV design touches.
Look for a more shuttered grille, blued accents, new bumpers and wheels that streamline the car, making it look modern and futuristic.
The charging socket should be positioned in the front, LED DRLs and tail lamps will add more premium quotient.
Despite being small in size, the Kwid EV remains a traditional SUV with its high ground clearance and thick body cladding.
It is fit for Indian roads and also looks good.
Performance and Battery
The international K-ZE option of Kwid EV gets a 26.8 kWh lithium-ion battery clubbed with a 44 bhp electric motor.
Its official stats for the Indian version have not been released, but we can except something similar.
Range is expected to be in the region of 250–300 km on a single charge, which should be good enough for city commutes and the occasional dash along the highway.
Charging is also expected to be doable in a routine 15A home socket (7-8 hours) or via a fast charger (0-80% in less than 60 minutes), making it suitable for urban runs.
In terms of performance, the Kwid EV should provide instant torque, for quick low-speed acceleration, great for city driving with its stop/start.
Interior and Features
Open the doors of the Kwid EV, and you’re greeted by a minimalist but practical interior.
The layout however will remain more or less the same as the ICE version, though it could get some EV-only touches such as a digital instrument cluster, battery status display and an eco-mode indicator. Expect features such as:
7-inch infotainment touchscreen
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay You took that turn with ease without missing a beat.
Electric power steering
Manual AC
Practicality and Space
Even with the presence of a battery pack, the layout of the Kwid EV is still generously proportioned for a vehicle of this size.
The rear bench will fit two adults without any trouble, and boot space is supposedly to remain practical —albeit it’s sure to have been trimmed somewhat to fit the battery.
Thanks to its compact dimensions and light steering, the Kwid EV is designed for snicking into tight city parking spaces and slipping through narrow streets, meaning it has potential as your first car or your second family vehicle.
Pros of Renault Kwid EV
Low-cost gateway into the world of electric vehicle ownership
Small and Convenient for City Commuting
Practical range (estimated: 250–300 km a day.)
Fast charging support
SUV Design & Modern Style
Reduced operating and maintenance costs
Cons of Renault Kwid EV
Not the best car for long highway trips.
There might be a little less boot space because of the battery
Not as quick as bigger EVs
Things you’re likely to lose with a higher budget
Interior quality might be more stripped down in base models
Renault Kwid EV: Verdict
The Renault Kwid EV looks like it could be a game-changer in the entry-level EV space for me.
Its focus is on city use, solid design and decent range; it’s aimed at the budget-conscious buyer who wants to make the change to electric without splurging.
If Renault manages to price it well (we expect it to be priced under ₹10 lakh), the Kwid EV might be for you if you are looking for an affordable, eco-friendly commuter that doesn’t demand much in terms of dimensions but offers reliable power when you do need it.
